"O great Deliverer, free our land from the great curse of intemperance. May we all have the wisdom and the courage to take the right and safe stand upon this question. May our homes be free from the curse of this blighting evil. Save the drunkard, we pray you, and save our boys and girls from ever becoming drunkards. For Christ's sake. Amen."

- Blogger's note - I have serious reservations about this prayer, particularly the bit about "the safe stand..." This was of course written during the Temperance movement, when well meaning do-gooders managed to make drinking alchohol federally illegal via the 18th ammendment. This prayer is however, an interesting peek into Victorian mentality. Furthermore, it can be modified to suit today's needs. Certainly imbibing has been taken too far in our culture. "May our homes be free (of drunkenness)... and save our boys and girls from ever becoming drunkards." It can also be modifed for all forms of chemical intoxication, such as drug abuse.

February 21

"Our heavenly Father, we thank you that you have given to us the sense of right in the life of Christ your Son. We pray you that wicked men may see their own lives in their wretchedness and horror, and turn to the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world. Amen."

February 20

"Our loving Lord, we thank you that you were a man, subject to like passions with us; that in all points you were tempted as we are. We thank you that you can give us control over our appetites, that whatsoever we eat or drink, we may do all to the glory of God. Amen."

February 19

"Most loving and gracious Father, we thank you that you have given to us the life and example of Jesus Christ, your Son. In him we see the creed and life we would follow. We thank you that the testimony of all those who have seen and known him is firm and convincing. May we, too, know whom we have believed. In his name. Amen."

Thursday, February 18, 2010

February 18

"Our just and gracious God, we are grateful for your fairness and your truth. May we never be influenced by the cries prejudices of men, but by the direction of a clear and positive conscience. Deliver us, we pray you, from the vacillations of pride of popular favor, and establish our faith in you. For Christ's sake. Amen."

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

February 17

"Our blessed Lord, we would be among that multitude who follow you gladly, affirming your sonship and salvation. Help us today to live the answer of faith to questioning hearts. May others know you and believe in you because we witness to the truth, as our lives testify of you. Amen."

February 16

"O You who were wounded for our sins and bruised for our iniquities, we would bow before you at this morning hour to worship and adore. We have each one of us gone astray, like lost sheep, but we thank you from our hearts that you have found and brought us back. Keep us in the fold. Amen."

Monday, February 15, 2010

February 15

"Eternal and ever-present God, we humble kneel before you to ask that Jesus Christ your Son may join us in our walk today. May each step be an onward step, led by him. May our hearts respond and glow as we listen to his words and gain his spirit, and as we recognize you will you not depart, but abide. Amen."

Sunday, February 14, 2010

February 14

"Early in our lives, dear Lord, may we learn to deny ourselves for you. May nothing which we value in earthly gifts and possessions keep us from following you day by day. Save your Church from the love of money by filling it with the love of God, that we may all know that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Amen."

Saturday, February 13, 2010

February 13

"Dear Father, may we be willing to give up that which we hold dear that we may attain to the highest in you. May selfishness die that Christ may arise in our lives. Help us today to give up, in order that we may give out, to deny ourselves that we may be able to give to others in your name. Amen."

Friday, February 12, 2010

February 12

"Help us, our heavenly Father, to live in your presence. May we take time to separate ourselves from the affairs of this life, and even from our companions, that we may be alone with you. May we reflect as a mirror the glory of the Lord. We ask it in Christ's name. Amen."

Thursday, February 11, 2010

February 11

'Lead us, we pray, our loving Lord, away from the scenes and words of this world into the place of height and quiet where we may see and hear thee. May we see "Jesus only," and hear thee alone, that we may go down into life's need, and help and save and transform. Amen.'

"Our loving Father, may our hearts be responsive to your invitation, and may we open the door to let you in. When temptation assails may we realize how near you are, and bid you come in. Monday, February 8, 2010

February 8

"Eternal and omnipotent God, we realize the greatness of your power, not only in your wonderful love, but in your judgement of sin. Sunday, February 7, 2010

February 7

"Our blessed and loving Father, give to us, we pray you, the knowledge of the awfulness of sin. Teach us how that those who live today in apparent quietness as the results of sin live to-morrow in dire destruction and wickedness. Save us from evil, and may we overcome it with good. Amen."

(Blogger's note: this not only applies to those sinners who go unpunished for a time, but to those who remain silent as to sin. There's a saying, I think, to the effect of: "Those who remain silent to sin become accomplices to it.")

Saturday, February 6, 2010

February 6

"Blessed and pure Master, show us your purity that with pure eyes we may see you. Save our cities, we pray you, from the awful spread of crime and immorality. February 5

"Our gracious God and loving Father, we thank you that the blood of Christ your Son cleanses us from all sin. Amen."
